Inclusive Design Philosophy
Nick believes that when design work is based in inclusive design praxis, we can build systems, spaces, experiences, and interfaces that meet the access needs of all users, foster a sense of belonging and dignity, and ultimately lead to more sustainable outcomes and longevity.
Through his lived experience, design work, and community advocacy work, Nick has witnessed firsthand how much of our designed world perpetuates monolithic solutions for certain subsets of the population while leaving others out. To Nick, that is unjust. Everyone’s liberation is bound to one another—we must always advocate for our more vulnerable neighbors and we must always strive to create, sustain, and strengthen networks of care in everything that we do. This is the foundation upon which Nick works.
Inclusion and accessibility don’t have to be costly afterthoughts, shoehorned into a design in a clumsy way. If inclusion and accessibility are baked into the design process from the outset, we can deliver beautiful and considered spaces and experiences that all users can enjoy equitably and navigate successfully, regardless of their background or ability. Nick believes the most successful designs incorporate direct testing, research, and input from the community of end-users, which not only makes them feel included in the design process but also instills a sense of belonging and stewardship, ensuring that they will care for the work and feel connected to it upon completion.
Nick’s unique approach blends traditional technical inclusive design principles with more contemporary thinking around creating equal access and a sense of safety and belonging thru design. You’ve checked the boxes to meet code-required accessibility compliancy, but have you collaborated with your target user community to ensure they have access, feel welcome, and have a sense of pride in the project? You’re meeting your organization’s diversity hiring quotas, but do your team members feel valued and seen? These are the challenges that excite Nick and where his expertise truly comes alive.
Here’s to a more accessible, inclusive, and just world.
